A Pre-Engineered Steel Roof: Keep Your Building Covered

Steel roofing can provide a virtually maintenance-free environment and a long serviceable life–if it is engineered and installed correctly. The right roofing application and details for the structure must be decided on by the person/s who is pre-engineering the building. The following article examines different categories of roofing to look at.

Pre-engineered steel building roofing can only be fully appreciated when any adjustments such as openings and ducts are reduced. All roof penetrations must be counteracted by field-cut segments, which will check heat or cold augmentations, allow the commercial grade steel to be endangered by destructive elements, and make the introduction of rain much more probable. A much better approach is to implement penetrations through walls as they are easier to safeguard from water seepage. With the use of architectural panels and felt underlayment, any openings through the felt should have the same design detailing and significant consideration put into premium grade steel openings. In the appropriate design of the pre-engineered steel building before construction commences, panel movement and counteraction to the introduction of water are other factors to be aware of. Since proper channeling of water is essential, felt should run on the trim and in the structure’s gutter, not behind it, for the best channeling.

All larger pre-engineered steel buildings should employ a complete assembly of high quality rain removal components. It might be tempting to save funds on a project by not including drainage elements but removing rainwater from a roof is necessary and a large number of professional quality structure manufacturers include these elements as a supplementary service. For example, without gutters and downspouts, dampness can cling to the underside of any steel roof and make its way into the pre-engineered steel building’s interior. Improper establishment of the sealants and closures for the roofing can cause this to happen.

Galvalume components are suggested for warehouse and production configurations and flashing for any steel structural roofing should be fabricated from the same supply. Copper, galvanized, or lead flashing should not be implemented with pre-engineered steel structure systems due to oxidation issues.

If standing-seam is considered, then the use of appropriate steel building products is important for a proper roof application. The “Pittsburgh-style” standing-seam roof is superior to the snap-on genres. The use of “structural roofing” of ΒΌ:12 and less is more logical than architectural steel building products for a 3:12 or more substantial pitch. Snap-on seams also do not fare well in high winds. As a last note, thinner gauged steel tends to be damaged easily by a hail storm, as any car owner who has witnessed this can confirm. Commercial grade steel panels that are of a thicker gauge should be used in areas where hail is a threat.
