All buildings should have proper ventilation regardless of the type of materials used, but ventilation of a steel building is especially critical. Steel buildings are very susceptible to condensation. Make sure that the steel building manufacturer or supplier you are considering purchasing a steel building from can provide any and all accessories you will require to properly ventilate your structure. These may include louvers, circular vents, and ridge vents. The amount of ventilation that a steel building requires is dependant on the dimensions of the building, the location of the project site, and what the building will be used for. A ten foot ridge vent will serve up to 2,400 square feet of interior space. However, heavily occupied buildings with many people, livestock, or certain materials require specific computations to correctly figure the proper ventilation. Cross ventilation is also key in any steel building and louvers placed near the base of the building helps a ridge vent on the roof to become more effective.
Make sure that the ridge vents that you choose for any steel building are adequate for the job. Ideally, ten foot vents should be used that provide nine inch throats. The ridge vents should be made of heavy duty 26 gauge steel. Most ridge vents are provided in a mill finish (unpainted) or in white and each ridge vent should come with a rain cap, bird screen, and adjustable adaptor. There should also be the connector bar and gutter splices needed for installing multiple units in a continuous run. Make sure that you choose the correct ridge vent that matches your roof pitch.
Circular vents are also available in unpainted or painted form. They are generally 20 inches in diameter. Each vent should also include a bird screen and a butterfly damper that locks open until released. Flat based vents can be field installed or modified to fit snugly on the chosen roof pitch.
Louvers are often used as the only ventilation in smaller steel buildings but, again, are most often used to facilitate proper cross ventilation in larger structures. Louvers are generally in 3′x3′, 3′x4′, and 4′x4′ sizes. Each comes painted or unpainted, and includes a bird screen, 16 gauge frames along with 20 gauge fins. Any unobstructed area of a wall can accommodate a louver but careful consideration should be give to where any louver will be placed during the design phase of the building.

The precise location of ridge and circular vents is important. Deciding on your exact requirements prior to purchasing your steel building, or very soon after, is important to ensuring a successful completion to your project.
